Sundials due
Sundials are due.
If it is still raining, we'll do another simulated observation of the moon's phase...perhaps in the planetarium?
Pre-test on the causes of the phases of the moon.
Everyone gets an in-the-classroom version of the phases of the moon explanation, followed by the definitions of the phase names.
One class will get additional instruction in the planetarium, assuming it is operating properly by then...

Characteristics of the moon's surface
NASA slide show.
Due to clouds, we'll show how to do artificial observations of lunar phases using starry night.
Last chance to ask questions about the sundial project.
Practice for lunar surface features quiz.
Moon photo
There is a moon photo posted on the main page of the astronomy class. I'm posting it here as well, but just in case you can't see it, go to the main class page and look for a link there.
The grid over the moon is irrelevant, ignore it.
Thanks to Jim Scala for the moon picture.

Test; Moon phase assignment begins
Today we took a test over the sun.
The next unit is about the moon; you should start observing phases of the moon for your observing notebook.
Record date, time. place, appearance of the moon (sketch), direction facing, estimate altitude and azimuth.
Repeat every other day for the next two weeks.
Up to 14 observations between now and the 27th can be used for observations. Only 7 are required.
Size of the Sun
APOD
Test on the sun.
Introduction to lunar phase watching activity.
